Obituary for Nadine Bettie Boman (Thurmon)

Print
Nadine Bettie (Thurmon) Boman, 97, of Buckner, MO passed away September 18, 2018. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at First Baptist Church 131 S. Hudson St, Buckner, MO, 64016. Services will be held at 10am on Monday, September 24, 2018 at the church. Burial will follow at Buckner Hill Cemetery.

Nadine was born on September 12, 1921 in Napoleon, MO, at home, to Eugene and Velma (Williams) Thurmon. She was the oldest of seven children. She attended elementary school at Ish School and Glenside (both country schools). She did not attend high school until the age of 16, spending her first three years at Levasy High School and then her last year was at Lexington where she graduated in May of 1941.

Nadine married James Marshal Boman on August 9, 1945 at First Baptist in Buckner. Jim and Nadine purchased a farm south of Buckner in the late 50’s, where she lived until her death. Jim preceded her in death on November 1, 1987 after 42 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister Lorna Finkemeier, and two brothers Lyman and James Thurmon.

Her survivors include sisters Velma Wright of Raymore, MO, Lois Culbertson of Blue Springs, MO, Laura Vanarsdall of Sibley, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; great-grand nieces and nephews; and 2nd great-grand nieces and nephews.

Nadine worked hard all her life. She went to National School of Aeronautics, which made it possible for women to work in defense. She was one of the first women to work at North American Aviation during the war (she was a “Rosie the Riveter”). She also worked at the local grocery store in Buckner, Union National Bank in Kansas City, Lake City Ammunition, Skelgas Propane, and helped a friend at his antique store and his estate sales. In addition to all of this, she was a homemaker and cared for all her nieces and nephews when needed.

Nadine was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for almost 78 years. She was baptized on November 17, 1940. She served in many volunteer positions over the years and was also a member of Red Hat Roadrunners of Buckner.

After retirement she enjoyed traveling and going to the country show in Pleasant Hill with her sister, Laura. In recent years, she enjoyed spending time with her sisters, visiting with friends and family, attending Red Hat luncheons and Keenager dinners, taking daytrips with Connie (Shrout) Roman – one of her borrowed kids, and spoiling her great-grand nieces and nephews. They would sneak off to Aunt Nadine’s for hugs, kisses, and lifesavers. Nadine never knew a stranger and loved her family, friends, and neighbors dearly. She will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Buckner, her great-nephew Zebadiah Dorsch Memorial (make checks payable to Keith or Connie Dorsch), or the Buckner Masonic Lodge.
